BaZi Basics
What is a Day Master?
In BaZi, also called the Four Pillars of Destiny, your birth is described by year, month, day, and hour pillars. Each pillar has a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch. The Heavenly Stem of your day pillar is your Day Master, the symbol that stands for you at the center of the chart.
There are ten Day Masters: the Five Elements in both Yang and Yin forms. Your Day Master does not describe everything about you by itself, but it gives the core point that the rest of the chart is read against.
Five Elements Cycle
How the elements relate
Wood feeds Fire, Fire creates Earth, Earth bears Metal, Metal enriches Water, and Water nourishes Wood. In a full chart, the useful element depends on overall balance, not just the Day Master label.
No. The Day Master comes from your birth date alone. Time only matters if you were born close to midnight, which is why the after 11 PM option is included.
How is it calculated?
Your day pillar is fixed by the continuous sixty-day cycle of the Chinese calendar. This tool resolves your date to that pillar and reads off its Heavenly Stem, which is your Day Master.
Is the Day Master the most important part of BaZi?
It is the anchor everything else is read against. A full reading also weighs the other pillars, the balance of elements, and your luck cycles over time.
